The “diaper cake” is a common baby gift constructed from folded diapers to form a cake shape. my bizarrely sexualized take on this niche uses the tacky, craftiness of the typical diaper cake to situate itself strangely within a gallery setting. Instead of celebrating the beginning of a life, my piece celebrates a transitional phase in adolescence – toilet training. In becoming toilet-trained, one’s genitals are for the first time private. Toilet paper is a symbol of this achievement, much like diapers are a symbol of birth. The strange feminine quality of toilet paper designs are also a main focal point in this piece.
The viewer is encouraged to deconstruct the piece and take remnants of the textiles. Because the toilet paper fabric portions are not treated as precious art items by the artist, the viewers are free to use them however they want resulting in the invasion of toilet paper into public environments.
